Kuiper Belt Object Orbiter (KBOO)

Mission Goals

  • Radioisotope Electric Propulsion (REP) orbiter to orbit Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs)
  • Trade REP power sources–ARTG (Advanced Radioisotope Thermal Generator) and ASRG (Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator)
  • Traded two KBO Targets–2001 GT322 and 2001 XH255
  • Shown–ASRG case targeting 2001 XH255

Mission Events

  • Launch on Delta IV Heavy with Star motor upper stage
  • Electric propulsion transfer to and operation at KBO
  • 2 years to Jupiter flyby
  • 15 years at KBO rendezvous
  • 12 months primary science in orbit of KBO
  • 17 years total mission
